The Green Economy could be seen as an opportunity to face the economic recession, by being innovative and thereby embarking upon a new phase of sustainable and competitive industrial development in Italy and in Europe. Yet this would require industrial research, greater co-operation between the public and private sectors, funding, new quality standards as well as greater and better communication.
This would require greater savings and a more efficient use of raw materials, an ever growing use of renewable raw materials, secondary materials or waste and, at the same time, the implementation of more efficient and sustainable manufacturing processes and systems along with the designing and production of recyclable products which are more biocompatible and/or biodegradable than the ones available at present. The adoption of primary and secondary biomass and organic waste as alternative raw materials to fossil fuel resources together with more specific and sustainable processing methods are the foundations of the European biobased economy, the central pillar of the European bio-economy which registers a turnover of over 2,000 billion per annum and more than 21.5 million jobs. The exploitation of waste in the supply chains for construction, ceramics, chemistry, metal working, steel, etc. is an opportunity for innovation and development for an overall European supply chain of 450,000 businesses, 6.8 million jobs and 1,600 billion in turnover. These new frontiers require research and innovation, a solid collaboration between university/public research and industry and greater "industrial symbiosis" to give rise to new value chains. These are exactly the goals of Ecomondo, which with its many different themed conferences held within exhibition areas brings national and European Research and Innovation straight to companies, encouraging the public-private collaboration required for their implementation.
