The vision of the Green Economy is the establishment of an economy that is internationally competitive, but also environmentally friendly and socially compatible. The Federal Government is undertaking a comprehensive, yet cost efficient, ecological modernisation of the entire economy, and all of its sectors to strengthen Germany's competitiveness - “Green Economy” will act as a factor for economic growth. To facilitate this, the Green Economy Research Agenda was developed in an agenda process, together with the big economic associations, unions, consumer organisations, and NGOs.

The task now is to implement the agenda, together with players and stakeholders, and to support the transformation to a Green Economy through innovation. The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing a total of 350 million Euros until 2018. Green Economy is firmly embedded in the framework of the Federal Government's new High-Tech Strategy, as part of one of the priority challenges “Sustainable Economy and Energy”. In the expert forum “Sustainable Economy” high-ranking representatives from the fields of economics, science, and civil society and other ministries are working to substantiate and develop topics within the agenda.
